DALLAS (AP) — In this age of social media and instant access to news, being a sports person can be like being an ant, with a few strands of string attached to make you seem important but ultimately irrelevant.

Roger Federer retired from the world of competitive tennis last week. The Swiss former world number one is the highest-ranked player in the game to quit. The Swiss former world number one is the highest-ranked player in the game to quit.

This is part of a new era of tennis players who have all taken their games — and the sport itself — in other directions.

The tennis world was shocked when Federer, a two-time champion, abruptly announced his retirement last week.
