The New York Times and Gro Intelligence Partner to Report on Global Hunger

Sara Menker and Gro Intelligence Are Tackling Global Hunger With The New York Times

(New York, NY) – Today at Gro Intelligence, the organization’s new CEO, Scott Schuman, and New York Times reporter Tom Edsall announce, “The New York Times is partnering with Gro Intelligence to produce an extensive report on global hunger. We’ve learned that the food system in the developing world is just as broken as the food systems in the industrial world. These systems are not the same – and it’s making people and their families feel like they’re the exception to the rule. The Times is committed to covering the issue of hunger in the world.”

“If it’s not broken, we don’t fix it. That’s how the food system works anywhere. The reason the system is broken is that there is a lack of responsibility for the consumer,” says Scott Schuman. “It’s a failure to treat the food system as a source of public good, in the same way we would treat our water or public transit. It is a failure on a macro scale. But even if it’s broken, fixing the food system starts at the individual level.”

The New York Times will use the extensive and detailed report produced by Gro Intelligence, which will be published in full in May 2015, to help consumers, investors, and governments understand the food system today. “The Times is committed to covering the issue of hunger in the world,” notes Sara Menker, executive director, Gro Intelligence. “The New York Times is a global institution and the newspaper’s reporting is world class. The timing is perfect for us to partner. We hope the New York Times will give us their full attention and resources to cover this issue.”

“In a world where hunger is so prevalent, it’s hard to find a better platform
